Best organic white wine?

Organic farming is playing a role in the agricultural world that is becoming more and more important. The concept of sustainability – development can be considered sustainable when it satisfies the needs of the current generations without consuming the resources belonging to the future generations – is not just a theoretical idea, but it is in fact a very practical thing: if our lifestyle does not change, what our planets can give us will not ne enough for us to survive anymore.

This is why the European Union has modified its policy concerning funds for agriculture, starting from the McSharry of 1992 and continuing with Agenda 2000, decoupling and – more recently – conditionality. At the same time, sometimes encouraged by these funds and more often because they believe in the importance of a healthier environment, a significant number of producers have converted their farms from conventional to organic.

The best organic white wine is made without using sulfites, and that is definitely a plus cause they are one of the main reasons why we feel a disturbing headache after drinking certain wines – even in small amounts. While the legal threshold of sulfites in wine is 200 mg/L, most doctors will agree on the following advice: it is better to limit the intake of sulfites to a much lower amount.

Of course, not using this well known preservative makes it more difficult to achieve great results in winemaking, but that is surely a challenge that any producer of the best organic white wine will be willing to take: the correct agronomical practices (encouraging natural predators and antagonists, for example), in accordance to the principles of modern agriculture, are one of the key factors leading to a truly sustainable farming which respects the environment and takes care of the health of people in all its aspects.

The bottom line is that it is surely a wise idea to start teaching and try the best organic white wine available on the market and compare it to some of your favourite bottles: alone, as an aperitif or matching the proper dish (fish, sea food in general, poultry, a vegetarian or vegan dinner…), it can let you discover new flavours and aroma – that is to say, to enjoy a new pleasure in life – taking care of what matters most: the environment around you and your own health.
